  Thallus on the ground or on rocks, forming irregular patches to c. 5 cm wide. Squamulae 1–3.5 mm long, 0.2–2 mm wide, lobulate, appressed to substratum or recurved with margins ascending. Pseudopodetia erect, much branched, 2–20 mm tall, pale greenish yellow or yellow-grey to white. Apothecia numerous, clustered, 0.1–0.8 mm wide, irregularly shaped, pedicellate; disc concave to flat, sometimes pruinose, pale to dark brown; exciple thick, involute in larger apothecia, paler than disc. Ascospores 6–10 × 3–4 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, KC+ yellow, or KC-; medulla C-, P-. Usnic, divaricatic and nor-divaricatic acids present.
     
  Uncommon on acidic soils and rocks in heathlands and dry sclerophyll forests in W.A., Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.
